Pìobaireachd music manuscripts and press cuttings
Scope and Contents
Contains sheet music of bagpipe tunes, and press cuttings of information concerning pìobaireachd and the history of the bagpipe, as well as information and photographs of individual pipers. The compiler, John Alexander Cameron, was a publican in Inverness, and there is a slight Inverness emphasis in the items collected. Arranged in folders as follows:
Acc.13535/1: manuscript scores, some printed, of bagpipe tunes. Including "Lament for Lieut Ian B. MacLeod of MacLeod; killed in France, 1915" by A.R. MacLeod.
Acc.13535/2: Press-cuttings from Inverness Journals and the Oban times, 1929-1952 and undated, concerning individual pipers. With two nineteenth-century photographs of pipe-major Alexander Maclennan and pipe-sergeant Paul Mackillop, both of the Inverness militia.
Acc.13535/3: Press-cuttings, 1903-1947 and undated, containing information on pìobaireachd, the history of the bagpipe and related subjects.
Acc.13535/4: correspondence, 1896-1901 and undated, and licences to sell intoxicating liquors issued to John Alexander Cameron and Donald Mackay in Inverness. Includes two letters, 1901 and undated, to S.F. Donaldson librarian in Inverness and also librarian to the Gaelic Society of Inverness, concerning the loan of his chanter.
