The papers, with some unmarked proofs which the National Library of Scotland did not acquire, were bought at auction by the Duchess of Hamilton. She subsequently donated the collection to the National Library of Scotland.

Appraisal
At the time of acquisition, a curator went through the papers with the donor`s agent and it was agreed that NLS would not take various clean sets of proofs of some of the books.
