Scope and Contents
The main part of the collection comprises the correspondence between Lady Lilian Adam Smith and her eldest daughter, Mary ['Maisie'] Buchanan Drew. These letters contain detailed, diary-like letters relating domestic matters, news and comments on current affairs, and family anecdotes and reflections, between the 1910s and Lady Lilian's death in 1949 and covering both World Wars. The collection also includes a series of Mary Buchanan Drew's journals, with a detailed account of her relocation from Scotland to the USA in 1918-1919; general correspondence of Mary Buchanan Drew; assorted papers of Charles S. Drew; a fragment of the correspondence of Lady Lilian and Sir George Adam Smith; family photographs; and ephemera.

The letters were sorted by Duane W. H. Arnold and annotated by Janet Drew Arnold, with some notable items of correspondence between Mary Buchanan Drew and Lilian Adam Smith extracted from the main chronological sequence in Acc.14385/2-44 to form subject files at Acc.14385/52-57; this arrangement has been retained.
