The letter describes a weekend's climbing in north-west Scotland with John Harding, Bill Norton and another mountaineer, including the party's avalanche-assisted descent of An Teallach, and a visit to the home of the explorer and writer Tom Longstaff and his wife Charmian in Achiltibuie.

The letter was found among a collection of books given by Janet Adam Smith to the Oxford University Mountaineering Library, now part of Bodleian Libraries, in 1992, and returned to the donor in 2019.
