Scope and Contents

Manuscript written in Scotland, containing accounts of the Archbishopric of St Andrews from October 1539 to May 1549. The entries provide information on the different kinds of grain delivered and expended as rendered by the 'Granitarius', and on the more general cash accounts rendered by the 'Camerarius'.

Borland suggests that the work is written by one hand. A section from folios 46r-65r, however, exhibits a different character of writing with distinctive pen-strokes, although still contemporary with the hand responsible for the majority of the work.

Each section is headed by a running title and also contains frequent scribal marginal references to the entries.

The manuscript is not decorated with any colour, but there are large flourished initials in plain ink.

Quire signatures are occasionally visbile in the lower right corner of the verso sides in the form of upper case letters; however, these appear to be later insertions, probably 18th century.

Custodial History

The manuscript was bought by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates from a William Munro on the 8th of December 1731 for £1-10-0. It is unclear if Munro was a bookseller by trade; no entry appears for him under relevant dates in the Scottish Book Trade Index.

There are ownership inscriptions for the Library on the rectos of folios ii and 1. The inscription on folio ii dates the manuscript's arrival in the Library as 1734.

The previous shelfmark assigned to the manuscript by the Library is on the recto of folio ii: 'W.1.3', since superseded.

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.

Physical Description

Paper.

The binding is 18th-century brown leather. According to an inscription on the verso of folio i the manuscript was bound by Hugh Mosman on the 16th of May 1734. The three edges of the front and back boards have blind-tooled edges. The volume has since been rebacked in red morocco. On the new back there are raised bands and gold tooling for the library stamp, shelfmark, and title which reads: 'RENTALE S. ANDREAE'.

The paper of the flyleaves and the manuscript proper have a watermark of a pot topped by a crown, similar to Briquet number 12645 (Rouen, 1528).
