Content Description
Letter, 1925, of John T. Macrae, Inverinate, to H. R. Macrae of Macrae, Flett and Rennie, W.S., concerning a Macrae monument erected by Col. John Macrae-Gilstrap. With a sketch of the monument and a transcription of the text on it.
Also contains typescript copies, 1908, of two Gaelic songs:
Donnchadh Mòr Mac Rath, song headed "Marbh rann do Tearachair [sic] Ban MacRath Fear Inbhirintait, 1711", beginning: 'A duigh 's mor mo chuid calla / 'Smi bhi amharc am fearann ud thall'. 6 stanzas of 8 lines. A lament for Fearchar Bàn MacRath. (Cf. Colm Ó Baoill and DOnald MacAulay, 'Scottish Gaelic vernacular verse to 1730: a Checklist, rev. ed. (Aberdeen 2001), no. 312.) Annotated on the back: "Old Kintail Song 1st Edition! as in Mr Matheson's book." This refers to its having been copied from a manuscript volume of Gaelic songs collected by Capt. Alexander Matheson of Dornie. Donnchadh Mòr's song appears in Matheson's third volume, a transcript of which is now held in the School of Scottish Studies (further volumes are in Acc.9711, box 2, nos. 2-4 and in Edinburgh University Library).
Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair, fragment of two four-line stanzas and the refrain of his song beginning 'An litir ghluais mo dhòchas, / A d' fhiosraich mi Didòmhnaich', publ. in D. MacCallum's 'Co-chruinneacha dhan, orain ... A collection of original poems, songs ... taken from oral recitation in various parts of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland' (Inverness 1821), 213-215, and in three editions of Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair's songs published in the 1830s. - This version contains a stanza on the Clan Macrae that is not found in the published versions.
