Chartulary of the bishopric of Moray, 16th century.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.34.4.9

Scope and Contents

Chartulary compiled in Scotland containing a selection of transcripts of charters, deeds, and acts of the Bishopric of Moray, covering the 13th to the 16th centuries. The manuscript is also known as the 'Red Book of the Church of Moray'. Davis dates the manuscript to the 16th century. Borland suggests that the manuscript can be dated to circa 1540, with later 16th-century additions. This suggestion is certaninly true of the later portion of the chartulary, but the first 94 folios were probably written in the early 16th century.

The work is multi-scribal and is written in a variety of charter hands.

The contents of the volume are as follows:

Late 16th century insertions of charters of the 13th century. Folios iir-viir.

A transcript based on folios 1-115 of the older Chartulary of Moray, Adv.MS.34.4.10, but with the material reordered. Folios 1r-94r.

This transcript was written by Donald Thomson, notary public. This is attested to by a note on folio 108v, possibly in the hand of Thomas Gaderar, commissary of Moray from 1534-1545. The note is dated 1540 and reads: 'secundo die me[n]sis maii anno d[omi]ni millesimo quinge[n]tesimo quadragesimo Comp[er]tu[m] est q[uod] sunt hucus[que] centum et duo folia manu quonda[m] d[omi]ni Donaldi Thome scripta seu registrata cora[m] re[veren]do in Christo p[at]re et d[omi]no Pat[ri]cio mis[er]a[tione] d[ivi]na Moravie[n]si ep[iscop]o monasterii[que] de Scona [com]me[n]data[rio] p[er]petuo d[omi]no? et ... Alex[and]ro Su[ther]land et ... Thomas Gaderar no[tarius] et com[m]iss[arius]'.

Folios 94v-95v are blank, but lined and ruled.

Miscellaneous acts of the Bishop and Chapter, 1492-1538. Folios 96r-154v.

Copies of deeds of dilapidation of Bishop Patrick Hepburn, 1538-1587. These documents are also in the second part of Adv.MS.34.4.10. Folios 155r-321v.

The manuscript is decorated in the form of plain penwork initials. Spaces have occasionally been left, with guide letters present, for initials not completed. Present on folio 107r is an initial and rubric in red. There are occasional representations of maniculae.

There are frequent marginal annotations relating to the charters, in both scribal and later hands. Many of the annotations have been lost due to cropping.

Various notarial instruments are present throughout the manuscript.

There is evidence of both contemporary and modern repairs to the vellum.

The folios to the front end of the manuscript have been lined and ruled recto and verso. The ruling and lining is inconsistent in the rest of the manuscript.

Pricking is occasionally evident for the horizontal lines, particularly towards the start of the volume.

There are three sets of 16th-century foliations which run throughout the volume in the upper margin, each overlapping the other.

Arrangement

i-vii + 321 + viii-ix folios.

The foliation is inclusive of several errors in foliation. The first is the duplicate enumeration of folios 130 and 191, since refoliated as 130a and 191a, respectively. The second is the apparent loss of folios 312 and 313. The third is the misplacement of folio 321 between folios 316 and 317.

Custodial History

According to Nicolson the volume probably belonged to William Hay, Bishop of Moray. This ownership is also attested to in the miscellany of antiquarian papers compiled by Richard Augustine Hay.

The manuscript was possibly acquired by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates in 1688, and according to Dalrymple it was certainly in the library by 1705.

Ownership inscriptions for the Library are present on the recto of folios i, ii, and 1.

The previous shelfmark assigned to the item by the Library of the Faculty of Advocates is present on the recto of folio i, 'A.1.41', since superseded.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
