The following leaves are missing (the references are to the National Library’s foliation): after folio 98, one leaf (corresponding to part of pages 31-33 of volume ii of the first printed edition); after folio 170, two leaves (volume iii, part of pages 8-16); after folio 304, two leaves (volume iv, part of pages 25-34). Folio 130 is misplaced, and should follow folio 128.
The chapters are divided into volumes, each with its own foliation, by Sir Walter Scott; but these volumes do not correspond to those of the first edition.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Presented, 1935, by Miss J G C Topham, M.B.E., of Middleham House, Yorkshire, great-granddaughter of Alexander Cowan of Penicuik, to whom it was presented by the creditors of Archibald Constable & Company in appreciation of his services as their Trustee.
