Correspondence of Major-General John Campbell, afterwards 4th Duke of Argyll, including many letters of his son, Colonel John Campbell, afterwards 5th Duke, relating to the rising of 1745-1746, and orders, intelligence reports, and intercepted Jacobite correspondence.
Scope and Contents
While there are many accounts of the operations of the main armies, the correspondence deals chiefly with Major-General Campbell's command in the west, i.e., the suppression of attempted risings and the pursuit of Jacobite’s after Culloden (in particular, correspondence and prisoners' declarations on the escape of Prince Charles Edward). The correspondents include the principal military and civil authorities concerned, officers of the Government troops, naval officers stationed on the west coast, Jacobites, and many persons of the name of Campbell. Much of the material is in the hand of George Anderson, Aide-De-Camp to Major-General Campbell.
A note on the history of the papers has been pasted in at the beginning of MS.3733.
