Four maps of parts of the Highlands relating to the estates of Edward Ellice of Invergarry (died 1863) and adjacent lands.
Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows: (i) ‘Map of part of the county of Inverness, particularly the estates of Glengarry ...’, lithographed Edinburgh, 1840. Scale 1" = 2¾ miles. Some of the estates are shown in different colours: a blue wash has been added by hand to most of the lochs. The estate of Glenquoich which is recorded as 'The Property of Macdonell of Glengarry for sale' is inscribed 'bought by E. Ellice' in a contemporary hand. Single sheet, 65 x 52.4 centimetres. (ii) ‘Plan of the estate of Knoydart’, copied from a plan of 1812, lithographed Edinburgh, undated. Scale 1" = 6 furlongs (approximately). A blue wash has been added to Glen Barrisdale and adjacent lands. The map was meant for signature by Edward Ellice and an unidentified H M as part of the deed of agreement between them, but was not signed by either. The deleted signature of Ellice's son appears in the lower right-hand corner. Single sheet, 53.2 x 65.4 centimetres. (iii) A sketch-map, undated, of land lying to the north of Loch Quoich. It has neither title nor date nor scale, but presumably was compiled about 1840 to illustrate a legal document involving the acquisition of property by Ellice. Single sheet, 67.3 x 46.3 centimetres. (iv) ‘Map of the Lands of Inverlochy Castle ... by G. Campbell Smith’, lithographed Edinburgh, 1840, scale 1" = 5½ furlongs (approximately). Unmarked, apart from the endorsement of the title. Single sheet, 71.9 x 52.4 centimetres.
