Existence and Location of Originals
The original of the letter to Arthur Tidman (folio 57) is in the National Archives of Zimbabwe (printed in ‘The personal life of David Livingston’ by William Blaikie, page 483 and in ‘Livingstone's missionary correspondence 1841-1856’, edited by Isaac Schapera, page 313); that of the letter to Mrs McRobert, 24 June 1843, is in the David Livingstone Centre, Blantyre (photocopy in MS.10708, folio 7); those of the remainder are unlocated.
Separated Materials
There are twenty-one letters of David Livingstone, 1842-1862, chiefly to Joseph Moore and John McRobert, Congregational ministers, and Mrs McRobert, together with a speech of welcome to Livingstone by the aldermen and burgesses of Congleton, ?1857, and recollections of Livingstone by Moore, undated. Summaries are added in the margins.
Most of the documents which William Blaikie quotes in full in his biography have been removed, presumably to serve as printer's copy, namely: folios 32-35, letter to Moore, 28 November 1860 (‘The personal life of David Livingston’, page 278; the original letter is MS.10768, number 15); folios 76-83, part of Moore's recollections (‘The personal life of David Livingston’, page 26); folios 160-163, letter to Miss Mackenzie, 3 October 1857, and poem by Mary Livingstone (‘The personal life of David Livingston’, pages 216, 199). In the first two cases the inner margins with the summaries remain.
The letters numbered XXII and XXIII in the index are not present, but without gap in the foliation.
