Letters of William Crichton Fyfe, Free Church missionary in Calcutta.
Scope and Contents
Three letters of William Crichton Fyfe, Free Church of Scotland missionary in Calcutta, to his parents, 1844.
The letters describe Fyfe`s early experiences in India, where he was employed in education. They cover subjects such as his daily life and work, an extended period of illness, and arrangements for his salary in the aftermath of the Disruption of 1843. During this period, although most missionaries elected to join the Free Church of Scotland, ownership of much overseas property was retained by the established Church. In this context, Fyfe details the deserted state of the once thriving school house in Cornwallis Square, and the establishment for the Free Church of a new school and a new church building, the foundation stone for which was laid by Alexander Duff.
