Scope and Contents

The letters of 1648 mostly concern the campaign against the Scots and the capture of Pontefract. Those of 1659 are on military and political matters and include the draft of Monck`s manifesto at Coldstream.

Custodial History

The manuscript was formerly in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps. It was bought by the Advocates’ Library at Sotheby`s, 11 June 1898, lot 1013.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
