Scope and Contents
The collection consists of copies of Ernest Robb`s emigration papers, c. 1900-1972. The papers include a typescript diary of the journey from Plymouth to Australia, an immigration identity card, Ernest Robb`s Australian passport, a receipt of passage`s money, a passenger`s contract ticket as well as photographs of Ernest and his brothers Jock, emigrant to Western Australia, and Bob, emigrant to the USA.
Ernest Robb was born in Castlehill cottage, Troqueer, Kirkudbrightshire, Dumfries, in 1902. He sailed in the S.S. ‘Demosthenes’ for Australia on 9th October 1925, arriving in Perth, Western Australia, on 17th November 1925. His brother Jock, who had emigrated a few years earlier and had a farm in Cadoux, had encouraged him to emigrate. Ernest possibly settled as a farm worker in Fremantle. His father’s illness prompted his return to Scotland in the S.S. ‘Orsova’ on 10th April 1933.
