Pocket-book of Augustus Charles Minchin, a graduate of Dublin University, containing accounts of walking tours in Scotland.
Scope and Contents
The material is somewhat confused, but appears to fall into four parts.
(i) Trips from Glasgow to Paisley, Ayr and Mauchline, 16-19 August 1818, mostly concerned with information about Robert Burns (folios 1-3, 102-105).
(ii) 'My Pocketbook'; possibly plans for a walking tour starting at Rothesay and ending at Edinburgh. A circuitous route involving places in the Lothians, Fife, Perthshire, Angus, Stirlingshire and Berwickshire is indicated; factual comments on these places, perhaps taken from guidebooks, are given, with the length of stages between each place noted in miles (folio 4).
(iii) A journal of a walking tour from Edinburgh to Glasgow, 27 August-21 September 1818. The route included visits to Stirling, Perth, the Trossachs, Oban, Iona, Dumbarton, and New Lanark; there are comments on the weather, accommodation and inhabitants, and lists of the names of plants observed (folio 44).
(iv) A 'list of Boxes and their contents' (folio 68 verso).
Blank folios separate the four sections. On folio 1 is the writer's name and various notes.
