Store book of Colonel [John] Adlecron's Regiment, 39th Foot, kept by Stephen Julian and Edward Forde, successive quartermasters, when the regiment was based in the Carnatic at Fort St David and Fort St George.
Scope and Contents
Copies of other documents of a military nature have been added. The volume has been damaged and several pages are missing, particularly at the end.
The contents are as follows:
(i) Quarterly records of stores issued for the use of the regiment, September 1754, to March 1759 (folio 1);
(ii) Copy of 'Instructions for the Commanding Officer of Train of Artillery attending His Majesty's Forces ordered to the East Indies', dated 21 February 1754 (folio 30 verso);
(iii) Copy of "General Instructions for the Engineers - suppos'd in Queen Anne's time" (folio 31 verso);
(iv) "Ordre de Battaille de l'Armeè [sic] alliez comme Ils seront Rangees le 4ieme d'Aoust, 1744"; a plan giving details of units, commanding officers, etc. (folio 32 verso);
(v) 'Gentooe alphabet' with some words in Malabar script (folio 33);
(vi) Copy of an indenture of stores, dated 24 November 1745, for 'a field-train of Artillery Directed to March with the Forces under the Command of Senoir John Ligonier...', and copies of other records of stores for the artillery in Flanders, 1746-1748 (folio 33 verso);
(vii) Plan of the disposition of the forces at Culloden, 1746 (folio 44 verso);
(viii) Fragment of a memorandum relating to trade between England and Holland, undated (folio 45);
(ix) Copy of 'Instructions for Thos. Yellowly, M[aster] G[unner] at Berwick', 8 July 1778 (folio 45 verso).
