Compilations on precious stones by Sir James Balfour of Denmilne.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) A work in six chapters or `casketts`. The first five each deal with thirteen kinds of stone, and the sixth with ten. Each stone is described, with its names, places of origin and medical uses. The compilation is based on the chapter `De Gemmis` in the ‘Aromatum Historiae’, and on the works of Nicolas Monard, Antoine Mizauld, Pietro Andrea Mattioli and other authors. (Folio 1.)
(ii) `Gemmarum Fraudes, seu Variae Homines ingeniosae inventiones ad fingendos Lapides praeciosos, ex Varijs Authoribus Collectae`. The author`s name is given after each entry. Many are taken from ‘Magiae Naturalis’ by Giovanni Battista della Porta, book iii. (Folio 79.)
(iii) ‘Ane Alphabet of pretious stones, mentioned by the Ancient Greicks and Romans`. (Folio 95.)

Custodial History
The manuscript was bought by the Advocates’ Library at the sale of Sir Robert Sibbald`s library, 1723.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
