Scope and Contents

Most of the material concerns European ceremonies of the 16th century, but rulers of the Incas, Mongols and others are also included. The final chapter `The Coronation of the Czarina of Muscovy May 1724` has been added in a later hand (folio 96).

The name Robert Innes in an 18th-century hand has been deleted (folio 14).

The descriptions of the coronations of the Scottish kings Alexander III, Robert II and James VI (folios 28-34) are printed in Balfour`s ‘Ancient heraldic and antiquarian tracts’, edited by James Maidment (Edinburgh, 1836), pages 32-50. The Scottish coronation of Charles I (folio 36) has been edited by Christopher Wordsworth in ‘Manner of the coronation of King Charles the First’, ‘Henry Bradshaw Society’, volume ii (London, 1892), pages 93-106. The English coronation ceremonies (folios 44-53) are copied from or based on the descriptions in ‘Catalogue of Honor’ by Thomas Milles (London, 1610), pages 51-60.
