Copy of ‘Memoirs of the Secret Services of John Macky (London, 1733) with manuscript annotations.
Scope and Contents
The volume also contains extracts of two letters, ?circa 1690, concerning the attitude of James VII towards the Church of England (folio 1), and `Some additional Characters of the chief of the last Ministry`, 1715, signed M S (folio 3). The characters, which are apparently copied from another manuscript, are of Bolingbroke, Stafford, the Bishop of London and others. The annotations, written
between 1781 and 1797, are signed `M.` and `E.M.` and are mostly copies of notes by Jonathan Swift, taken from his own copy of Macky`s ‘Memoirs’. According to a note on the front flyleaf, the original notes were used in the supplement to Swift`s ‘Works’ by John Nichols.
