Manuscript of the ‘Regiam Maiestatem’, statutes, burgh laws, `Quoniam attachiamenta`, and `De judicibus`, written by Alexander Foulis in 1454; the last two items have been completed and other statutes, etc., added by a later hand.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) Fragment of chapters in a later hand (folio 1).
(ii) `Regiam Maiestatem` in 3 parts of 34, 108, and 58 chapters (parts 1 and 2 are numbered continuously) with table at the beginning (folio 2). ‘Acts of the Parliament of Scotland’, i, pages 233-277.
(iii) `Assisa Regis David` in 46 chapters (modern numbering) (folio 30 verso). ‘Acts of the Parliament of Scotland’, i, pages 3-13.
(iv) `Statuta regis Roberti Bruys` in 28 chapters (modern numbering) (folio 34 verso). ‘Acts of the Parliament of Scotland’, i, pages 107-114.

Initials in the parts written by Foulis are in red; the first on folio 4 is infilled with a checkerboard design in red and black. Colophon on folio 30: `Explicit Regiam Maiestatem scriptus per manum Alexandri de Foulis ii die mensis Aprilis anno domini mº ccccº liiij[?]º Indictione secunda pontificatus Domini Nicholai anno viiiº.` Sections (viii) and (ix) are completed and (vii) and (x)-(xvi) added in a cursive hand of the late 15th century, which has also added a chapter on folio 37. Sections (xvii)-(xviii) are in a late 16th-century hand.

Collation: from sequence of watermarks 2 leaves, 1¹⁴, 2¹⁸, 3¹⁴, 4¹⁸, (-18, probably blank; + 2 leaves after 11 and 3 after 17), 5¹⁰, 6¹⁶, thereafter (from folio 97) uncertain; the present sewing, giving 1 leaf and 21 gatherings of alternately 4 and 8 leaves, was presumably imposed at the 20th-century repair. No signatures or catchwords. Ruling with hard point (Foulis parts only). 1 column. 37-42 lines (Foulis), 42-46 lines (later hand), 37-43 lines (16th-century hand). Ruled area 198-205 x 150-155 millimetres (Foulis).
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Paper (watermarks: gatherings 1-4 wheel, similar to Briquet 13293, France, 1461-1481; gathering 4 ox-head, similar to Briquet 15054, France, 1441; gathering 4 added leaves uncertain; gathering 5 vase; gathering 6 to end hand containing P I and surmounted by a flower, presumably circa 1575). The paper has been extensively repaired and the volume rebound by Henderson and Bisset, Edinburgh, circa 1930.
Custodial History
The name Thomas Craufurd, 17th century, appears on folio 49 verso. A note concerning Charles Geddes of Bathey, 17th century, is on folio 125. An ownership note, in which the name has been erased, is also on folio 125. Old pressmark: Jac.V.2.6. The manuscript was acquired by the Advocates’ Library before 1787.
