Manuscript of ‘Leycester`s Commonwealth’, an attack on the Earl of Leicester, here given the title: `The coppie of a l[etter] written by a M[?] of Artes Cambr[idge] to his freind in London concerning some talke past of late … about the presente State and some proceedings of the Earle of Leycester and his freindes in Englande`.
Scope and Contents
The author was probably Sir Charles Arundell (see Leo Hicks in ‘Studies’ xlvi, pages 99-103), but the work has also been attributed to Robert Persons and Thomas Morgan. It is followed here by `A godly and Proffitable Meditacion of the 20th chapter of Job` (folio 71 verso).
The manuscript has been badly damaged and most of folios 46-57 is missing. The names John Corsonne, Richard Corsonne and Thomas Miles occur in the margins, and a note on the titlepage reads `John corsonne write the same`.
