Composite volume made up in or about 1819 (the date of the watermark of the binder`s blanks) from five folio notebooks of Lieutenant-General G H Hutton.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the volume are as follows:
(i) Extracts, 1797, in the hand of the chief clerk, Robert Lemon, from the `Rotuli Scotiae` kept in the Tower of London (cf. folio 282). The extracts relate to the ecclesiastical antiquities of Scotland. The manuscripts were published, in two volumes, in 1814 and 1819. (Folio 1.)
(ii) Copies by Hutton of charters of Newbattle Abbey (folio 32). The source is unidentified: they are in a different order from those of the cartulary (Adv.MS.34.4.13) and of R A Hay`s transcript (Adv.MS.34.1.10(i), folio15). Alterations, chiefly of spelling, are written in pencil by Hutton on some of the leaves. Followed by a list in pencil of principals of religious houses (folio 87). For Hutton`s copy of Hay`s transcript see 20.3.3.
(iii) Copies by Hutton of charters relating to Balmerino Abbey (folio 102) from an unidentified source, in a different order from that of the cartulary (Adv.MS.34.5.3), and from the transcript of it by Walter Macfarlane (Adv.MS.35.3.13, folio 67). Preceded by a list of the charters transcribed, with page-references to Macfarlane`s transcript (folio 101). For Hutton`s transcript of the cartulary see Adv.MS.9A.1.4. Immediately following (folio 116 verso) is a copy by Hutton of charters relating to Melrose Abbey from an unidentified source, in a different order from the cartulary (Adv.MS.34.4.11) and from Macfarlane`s transcript (Adv.MS.35.3.13, folio 1). Followed by a list of principals of religious houses (folio 138) and a list of the charters copied, with page-references to Macfarlane`s transcript (folio 139).
(iv) Copies by Hutton of foundation and other charters of religious houses (folio 153). The first two are from copies in Sir Lewis Stewart`s collection (Adv.MS.34.3.11, pages 155-157), the rest are from unidentified sources apart from a few at the end, which are from the cartulary of Balmerino Abbey (folio 187). Followed by a list in pencil of principals of religious houses (folio 189).
(v) A miscellaneous collection 1789-1790, 1800, mostly in Hutton`s hand (folio 204 verso), of notes, copies and letters, transcripts of charters with sketches of the seals, and copies and extracts of various sources, including several (folios 206-214 verso) from James Anderson`s ‘Diplomata Scotiae’. Tipped in after this are a letter, 1797, from Hutton to Lemon (folio 282) and notes of manuscripts in the Tower of London and other repositories (folio 285). The following, most of which are binder`s leaves, are blank: folios i-v, 39-51, 89-100, 141-151, 191-203, 284, 287, 290, 292-300, vi-xxiii.
Section (v) was compiled in and about 1789-1790, and (ii)-(iv) probably about the same time, or a little later.
