Miscellaneous and somewhat confused collection of papers consisting mostly of genealogical notes and extracts by the antiquary Walter Macfarlane of Macfarlane relating to a number of Scottish families. In addition there are numerous writings by Macfarlane on other topics, and notes and extracts in other hands.

The dated items were written between 1748 and 1754: most are undated but are doubtless contemporary, apart from a legal opinion 1636 (folio 62) and some genealogical notes 1718 (folio 142).

Custodial History
The collection may have been at some time in the possession of Sir Robert Douglas; almost certainly it was later in the possession of George Chalmers who apparently was responsible for having it bound (the binding is similar to others known to have been in his possession. An impression apparently of his bookplate is visible at folio i. Subsequently it was number 11537 (or part thereof) in the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps. This is described in his catalogue as ‘Macfarlane`s Collections for the Scotch Families of Agnew, (etc.) 2 Vols. f. ch. s. xviii’, but the number, which does not appear in this volume, is written inside the front cover of Adv.MS.20.1.14, apparently wrongly, unless it was the second volume. It was sold with Adv.MS.20.1.14 as lot 700 at the sale of Phillipps`s manuscripts at Sotheby`s in June 1893.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
