Manuscript, of uncertain origin written in the 12th or 13th century, containing medical treatises.
Scope and Contents
The contents of the manuscript are as follows:
(i) Gariopontus, `Passionarius Galeni`, in seven books. The author`s name is not given; the title in the incipit is `liber Galieni ad Glaucum nepotem` (cf. British Library, Royal MS.12 E.XX, folio 33), in the explicit `liber Galieni Passionarius`. (Folio 1.)
(ii) `Antidotarius particularis`, incipit `Aurea alexandrina antidotum facias ad reuma` (cf. ‘Catalogue of Incipits of Medieval Scientific Writings in Latin’, column 165). (Folio 95.)
(iii) Recipes in several hands of the 14th and 15th centuries, incipit `Trociscus ydiocri`. (Folio 123.)
There are marginal notes throughout. The initial to Gariopontus book 1 is in red, green and purple, that to book 2 in these colours plus blue. Other initials and headings are in red, the initials at the beginnings of books being more elaborate. There is an early foliation of Gariopontus, and the numbers have been inserted in the lists of chapters to books 1-5.

Collation: 1-6⁸, 7¹⁰, 8-15⁸, 16². No signatures or catchwords. Pricking with flat awl through the folded gathering. Ruling with hard point. 1 column. 37 lines. Written area 160 x 90 millimetres.
Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Vellum. Binding of brown sheepskin, tooled blind (rebacked), with two clasps, mid 17th century.
Custodial History
The ex-libris of Sir James Balfour, dated 1629, and a contents-list by him are on folio ii; his signature is on folio 1, and Denmilne number (8) on folio i and mark on folio 124. The volume was number 163 in the sale of his library. Former pressmark: A.6.41. The manuscript was bought by the Advocates’ Library in 1698.
