13th-century manuscript of 'Aurora' by Peter Riga.
Scope and Contents
The text is that of the third mediaeval version (see Paul E Beichner`s edition, volume 1, page xix), but like Notre Dame University Library MS.2, does not include the Liber Iob and Cantica Canticorum. The author`s name is given in a colophon to the Evangelium (folio 155 recto).
The manuscript has been misbound, and folios 89-104 should precede folio 81. One passage in III Kings, which Beichner (volume 1, page 300, lines 13-66) attributes to the first recension of Aegidius, is included (folio 94 verso). In the Evangelium, lines 197-424 and 1005-1229 follow line 1234, and lines 1230-1243 (the seven petitions, gifts, virtues and beatitudes) are repeated. The Actus Apostolorum is followed (folio 174 verso) by an explanation in prose of the relationship between the three Marys.
Written in littera gothica textualis media in two hands, the second of which begins on folio 153 verso. There are marginal notes and additions in contemporary hands, including (folios 8 verso-9) plans of the Ark according to St Augustine and Walafrid Strabo, and a few 15th-century annotations. An inscription of five lines has been erased on folio 174 verso. Some of the larger initials are in pink, green and buff with decorative penwork, although a number have been cut out. There are smaller initials in red and blue and rubrics throughout. Ruling is in lead plummet.
