Fair copy, in a contemporary hand, of `De Hominio Disputatio` by Sir Thomas Craig.
Scope and Contents
Sir Thomas Craig wrote this work in 1603 to show that Scotland had never done homage to England, in reply to strenuous claims to the contrary in the 1587 edition of Holinshead`s ‘Chronicles’ (`in manibus hominum his sexdecim annis`- page 2). Like many of Craig`s works this was not published in his lifetime; but an English translation, almost certainly from another copy (pages xxxvii-xxxviii), was produced at London under the title `Scotland`s Soveraignty asserted ...` by George Ridpath in 1695.
This copy had been thought to be Craig`s original, but gaps in the text at pages 49 and 86 indicate that it is a copy.

Custodial History
From inscriptions in the outer margin of page 1 it appears that this copy was owned by: Ferdinando Fairfax on 20 March 1657, a gift from the physician Christopher Irvine; by the antiquary and topographer Ralph Thoresby in 1695 - presumably inherited by his son, Ralph, as part of his library, which was sold after the son`s death in 1765; by the Chevalier Charles G L A T d`Eon de Beaumont; and by G Page Turner in 1825, who gave it to Sir Thomas Phillipps in 1827. Some small numbered labels indicating library press-marks are stuck to the spine: 728/3 (twice) and 2704/3 may refer to the Thoresbys` ownership; 1008 may refer to Turner`s. Bought by the Advocates’ Library, Sotheby`s, 11 June 1898, lot 1008.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Presented, 1925, by the Faculty of Advocates to the nation on the foundation of the National Library of Scotland.
