Gaelic songs and verse., ca. 1800-ca. 1860
Scope and Contents
A collection of single sheets, bifolia and folded booklets containing Gaelic poetry taken down by Irvine in person or sent to him by others. The presence of some items that clearly post-date him suggests that his family continued to add to the collection for a while.
The collection had been bound into a folder of thick paper, ca. early 20th century, with paper stubs stitched into the inside, and with the manuscripts pasted onto the stubs. Pagination in ink was then added on small pieces of paper pasted onto the manuscripts. Both the binding and pagination method resulted in some text being obscured. Due to the fragility of the folder and its contents, the manuscripts were disbound and the pasted-on page numbering removed. The original pagination has been reinstated in pencil, however.
