Manuscript of John Cam Hobhouse giving his account of the separation of Lord and Lady Byron, with his copies of related correspondence., 19th century.
Scope and Contents
This volume contains the manuscript of John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton, relating the events of the separation of Lord and Lady Byron. Hobhouse was the confidant of Lord Byron and often acted on his behalf during the first few months of 1816, when the separation was being negotiated.
In addition to his own recollections, Hobhouse also records copies of letters relating to the separation. Some of the original letters that are copied here are held in Ms.43520.
The manuscript was privately printed in 1870 with a further work of Hobhouse (the mansuscript for which is housed as Ms.43534) as 'Contemporary account of the separation of Lord and Lady Byron; also of the destruction of Lord Byron's memoirs'.
Also housed in the volume is a copy of the exhibition label from the 1974 'Byron: an exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his death in the Greek War of Liberation, 19 April 1824' at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
