Hymns of Dugald Buchanan., ca. 1760
Scope and Contents
A small booklet of 10 folios, 18.8 x 11.7 cm. It contains two hymns of Buchanan, who is not identified as the author, and a fragment of another song. Formerly Acc.2152/3. The two hymns by Buchanan are in the hand of Rev. Donald MacNicol, while the fragment is possibly in a different, unidentified hand. The contents are:
[Bochanan, Dùghall]. Song headed "Dan mu thiomcheal Claigionn Duine mhairibh", beginning ''Smi 'm shuighe ag an Uaimh / Aig amhrac ma Bruaich'. 43 stanzas of 6 lines. First published as "An claigean" in 'Laoidhe spioradail le Dùghall Bochannan' (Edinburgh 1767), pp. [46]-56. Folios 1r-6r.
[Bochanan, Dùghall]. Song headed "An Geamhradh is an Tsean Aois ar an samhlucha ri Cheile", beginning 'Do theirig an Samhradh / S Thah 'n Geamhradh tighinn dlu oirn'. Tune: 'Air fonn Se do Lá sa Rhoin ruori &c.' 24 stanzas of 8 lines. First published as "An geamhradh" in 'Laoidhe spioradail', pp. [57]-64. Folios 6v-10r.
Song, unheaded and incomplete, beginning 'Si mo run do Laibheag laoghach / Thigeadh Spal bu mhian bhi taghal'. 2 stanzas of 8 lines, the second crossed out. Folio 10 v.
