Notes, 1990-1991, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘Tooth and Nail’.

The notes include working notes as well as research notes on forensics and pathology, police procedure, and serial killers. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including first and final drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of development and changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.

The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for the revised drafts. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.
