Notes, 1985-1993, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters for ‘Mortal Causes’. Folios 1-69.
The notes include first working notes towards the novel as well as research notes, including research about Orange Marches, Ulster, police procedure, and juries. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.

The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for the second, third, and final drafts. The distinction between notes relating to specific drafts is not always clear. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.
Also included are editorial notes of Bill Massey (Editor, Orion Publishing Group) (Folios 116-121) and subsequent editorial notes by Rankin.
