Developmental notes of Ian Rankin for his novel ‘Black and Blue’., 1994-1996.
Scope and Contents
Notes, 1994-1996, of Ian Rankin relating to the development of the plot and characters of his novel ‘Black and Blue’. Folios 1-112.
Most of the notes are undated. Some of the notes include references to specific drafts, including first, second, and third drafts. Otherwise, the distinction between the notes and drafts is often unclear. Some notes have been revisited and subsequently annotated by Rankin as his development of the novel progressed. As far as possible, evidence of changes in theme and plot have been used to inform the arrangement.
Editorial notes, 1996, of Ian Rankin relating to the second draft of ‘Black and Blue’. Folios 113-137.
The notes relate to plot and character revisions, and additional plot development, for the second draft. Most of the notes are undated and, as such, the arrangement has been suggested by a comparison of changes in plot and theme.
Typescripts, 1996, of developmental drafts of the Bible John sections of the first printed draft of Rankin’s novel ‘Black and Blue’, with annotations by the author. Folios 138-150.
These sections were written separately as part of the first draft process and were included subsequently in the second draft.
