 Item
Identifier: Acc.14066/2

Scope and Contents

Bound volume containing handwritten transcriptions of letters, 2 February 1915-4 December 1915, to Helen Fraser from correspondents including Anne [Annie] Fraser, 'M.C.', Ada [Jones, later Fraser], Alice, Norman Fraser, Mary, Mac [Malcolm Fraser], Ronald Fraser, 'Mother' [Christina Fraser, née Sutherland], 'Elsie M.', Mary, James Fraser, and Hugh Fraser. Also included are several diary entries describing meetings between Helen Fraser and her brothers while on leave, and a loosely inserted letter, 8 December 1915, of Hugh Fraser to James Fraser. Subjects covered include: political speeches in Glasgow; Helen Fraser's freelance journalism; women war workers, including in hospitals and munitions; news of naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign; the sinking of the Lusitania; the issue of 'war babies' born out of wedlock; work at the War Savings Committee; Zeppelin raids over London; the birth of 'Little George' [George Sutherland Fraser]; and conditions on the Western Front, France, and Gallipoli, Turkey, with graphic descriptions of trench warfare. The transcriptions, some of which appear to be abridged, were possibly made during the First World War by Helen Fraser to form part of her 'War Collection' (see letter dated 22 November 1915).
