Scope and Contents

The letters, mostly to William Makepeace Thackeray, are arranged alphabetically by the surnames of the writers. Where two or more letters are held for the same author they are arranged by date.

Many of the letters are contained in the orange filing slips that were used commonly by Smith Elder and Company in the administration of its correspondence. Several of the slips are marked "Publication Department", others "Cornhill Magazine", and some are marked with both designations.

À Beckett, Gilbert.

Letter, 14 July 1874, in which à Beckett proposes to write an article for the Cornhill Magazine on the conventual hospitality offered by an order of nuns on the Breton coast. Folios 1-5.

Allan, Alexander.

Letter, 14 June 1863, enclosing a manuscript of a poem, "Long Branch", for the consideration of Thackeray. Folios 6-11.

Arnold, Robert.

Letter, 23 January 1861, to Thackeray concerning an article by Arnold on the Thames Embankment. Arnold suggests that his brother, Edwin Arnold, may be known to Thackeray. Folios 12-15.

Bewley, J.H.

Letter, 13 February 1860, probably to Thackeray, concerning the death of Captain Henry Glynn. The letter includes three cuttings from the ‘New York Times’. Folios 16-18.

Cole, Charles A.

Letter, 3 April 1860, to Thackeray submitting a ‘tale’ for his consideration. The tale is not held. The letter is written on Public Record Office stationery. Folios 19-21.

Cowan, Frank.

Letter, 20 November 1878, forwarding a copy of ‘Southwestern Pennsylvania in Song and Story’ for review in the Cornhill Magazine. The enclosure is not held. Letterhead, “Edgar and Frank Cowan, Attorneys at Law, Greensburg, Penn'a". Folios 22-24.

Letter, 24 January 1861, to Thackeray offering an essay, "Sisyphus and his stone", for his consideration. The essay is not held. Folios 25-28.

Letter, 22 April 1860, to Thackeray offering a translation of the 22nd Idyll of Theocritus for his consideration. The translation is not held. Folios 33-36.

Pretyman, J.R.

Letter, 20 January 1860, to Thackeray offering a poem, "Sympathy", for his consideration. The poem is not held. Folios 37-40.

Reynolds, John Russell.

Letter, 26 March 1860, to Thackeray offering for his consideration some poems by the landscape painter John Inchbold. The poems are not held. Folios 41-44.

Rice, James.

London editor of the "Toronto (Canada) Globe".

Letter, 15 January 1877, offering to submit "a substantial instalment of a novel at a future time" for the consideration of the Editor. Folios 45-48.
