Scope and Contents
The lists or indexes are of the following material:
(i) Sheet music of Scottish interest (folio 1);
(ii) Printed compositions, 1930, by James Scott Skinner (folio 62);
(iii) The collections, 1931, printed by the Gow family (folio 69);
(iv) Scottish Country dances with tunes and alternatives found in various collections published from 1924 onwards (folio 78);
(v) Tutors and collections of bagpipe music, 1948 (folio 83);
(vi) The Drummond Castle manuscript, written, 1743, by David Young (folio 90);
(vii) Kidson manuscripts, 1948, in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow (folio 94);
(viii) Scottish music in the Ruggles Brise collection in the Sandeman Library, Perth (folio 96);
(ix) 'Tunes in operas containing Scottish airs', which chiefly concerns 18th-century ballad operas (folio 101);
(x) All editions of ‘The dancing master’ by John Playford (folio 104).
The volume also includes:
(xi) Lectures by John Murdoch Henderson on musical subjects, several of which were illustrated by performances by William Hardie and others, and this section includes the music (folios 143-148) of three broadcasts given by Hardie in 1936 (folio 118);
(xii) Miscellaneous notes on music and natural history, including (folio 149) a key to the tablature of the Skene manuscript (Adv.MS.5.2.15) (folio 149);
(xiii) An account, Easter 1958, by a schoolmistress from Aberdeen of a visit to Paris made by her with a class of girls (folio 158);
(xiv) Miscellaneous correspondence, 1943, 1946, 1951-1952, 1961, 1966, 1968, including a letter, 1943, from Margaret Dean Smith concerning Playford, and material concerning Henderson's dealings with the Performing Rights Society (folio 164).
