Scope and Contents
Papers of the Earls of Argyll: general correspondence, 1589-1690 (folio 1); letters, chiefly conveying the Countess's orders for farm-produce, etc., to the factor at Roseneath, 1673-1674 (folio 65); list of house-plenishings, 1674, undated (folio 74); accounts, 1642-1696, undated, chiefly of the Earl and Countess, 1670- 1678 (folio 78).
The letters deal, among other subjects, with the commission sent to settle the Western Highlands in 1678-1679 and the conduct of Lord Macdonald (folio 30), and the marriage of Archibald, afterwards 1st Duke, and Elizabeth Talmash (folio 50); and include answers to Argyll's claims regarding the Admiralty of the West Seas (folio 60), a list of heritors of Argyllshire who were in the rebellion of 1685 (folio 61), and an excerpt from the proceedings of the Committee of Estates in 1647 regarding the creditors of Argyll and Montrose (folio 64). Among the writers are Locheil (1675-1679) and the Duchess of Lauderdale (1679-1680).
The accounts refer to household materials, dress, food, and the wages of masons, etc., working at Inveraray and Roseneath.
