Another manuscript of this work, at Mellerstain, was edited by Professor M L Anderson as ‘Some directions about raising forest trees by Thomas Hamilton, 6th Earl of Haddington’ (London, 1953). The work had previously been published, with some variations, bound with John Reid "The Scot's Gard'ner" (Edinburgh, 1756), and in 1761 in the form of a letter to the author's grandson.
