Scope and Contents
The first ten pages of the manuscript are missing. The contents are as follows. (i) Excerpts from classical authors on topics such as pleasure, punishment, eloquence etc. (Folio 1.) There are also a few items on law, including an address to a jury in a case concerning gypsies (folio 8) and a speech against the Heritable Jurisdiction Bill, 1747. (Folio 18 verso.) (ii) 'The general plan of Aristotle's philosophy'. (Folio 32 verso.) (iii) ‘τα προτα τυς φιλοσοφια'. (Folio 36 verso.) (iv) Extracts from Plato. (Folio 55 verso.) (v) 'Of the ancient Greek comedy'. (Folio 63 verso.) (vi) 'A discourse on language'. (Folio 72.) (vii) 'An abridgement of the Ethicks of Aristotle and of the science of morals before Aristotle'. (Folio 99 verso.) Monboddo number 33. The volume is referred to by Lord Monboddo as ‘Folio MS.5’.
