Papers of Archibald Seton, chiefly correspondence, covering the period of his life spent in India., 1782-1818.
Scope and Contents
Archibald Seton’s career as a civilian in the East India Company was a successful one and his papers include letters of appointment to posts in India such as Resident at Delhi, Governor of Prince of Wales Island, and Member of the Supreme Council of Bengal. Among the private papers here is his correspondence with Alexander Adamson of 1794-1795 concerning the wanderings and death of his father, Hugh Seton (folios 23-42). There are also a number of letters to the Commissioners of his affairs in Britain, but the majority form his correspondence with his brother in law, Hugh Stewart, 1st Baronet of Allanton, regarding family affairs and the management of his estate of Touch.
