Scope and Contents

The contents are as follows: (i) Letters, 1807-1812, of Patrick Chalmers (died 1824) to his son and daughter-in-law. (Folio 1.) (ii) Letters, 1786-1793, undated, of Patrick Chalmers (died 1824) to his cousin Miss Catharine Chalmers, with a few of her letters to him. Most of the letters have been docketed by Chalmers to indicate the many and varied subjects discussed in this lively and humorous correspondence. (Folio 56.) (iii) Copies of letters, 1762-1805, of Patrick Chalmers (died 1824) to various persons (Folio 101.) (iv) Letters, 1829-1843, of Frances Chalmers, wife of Patrick Chalmers (died 1826), to her son Patrick. A number of the letters describe travel in France and Italy. (Folio 114.) (v) Letters, 1831-1867, of John Inglis Chalmers, younger son of Patrick Chalmers (died 1826) and Frances Inglis, to various members of his family including his wife Margaret Inglis, of whom two letters are also included. (Folio 155). (vi) Letters, 1858-1896, of Norman Chalmers, son of John Inglis Chalmers and his wife Margaret. Most of the letters, 1882-1886, relate to Chalmers’s service as a Captain in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in Egypt and the Sudan. There are interesting descriptions of the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882, of army life in Egypt, and of the Gordon Relief Expedition to Khartoum in 1884-1885. Later correspondence relates to Chalmers’s life in New Zealand. (Folio 189.)
