The contents are as follows: (i) General political correspondence, 1784-1841. Writers to Patrick Chalmers (died 1824) include Archibald James Edward, 1st Baron Douglas; George, 8th Earl of Dalhousie and Elizabeth, Countess of Dalhousie. Letters to Patrick Chalmers (died 1854) discuss local political affairs. (Folio 1.) (ii) Correspondence concerning the election of 1832 in which Patrick Chalmers (died 1854) contested Montrose District and was defeated by Horatio Ross. Correspondents include Sir James Gibson Craig; William, 1st Lord Panmure; Joseph Hume, M.P.; Robert Lyon; and Patrick Chalmers (copy letters to, e.g., Edward Ellice). There is a plan of the polling booths at folio 85. (Folio 36.) (iii) Political correspondence, 1833-1838. Correspondents include Fox Maule, later 11th Earl of Dalhousie; and Alexander Currie.
