A letter book, 1740-1744, from the Chalmers papers was bought by the University of London library in 1964 (their MS 628). This large volume (339 folios, folio) includes many letters to George and William Catanach and to British merchants in European and North African ports. Some letters are in Spanish. The letters are addressed to agents and merchant houses in Aberdeen, Algiers, Amsterdam, Bardon, Berwick, Bordeaux, Boston, Cadiz, Cork, Dunbar, Dundee, Edinburgh, Faro, Genoa, Hamburg, Leghorn, Leipzig, Lisbon, London, Madeira, Mahan, Messina, Norwich, Palermo, Peterhead, Portsmouth, Santa Cruz, Tangier, Tetuan and Yarmouth.
