Scope and Contents
The contents are as follows.
(i) Letters of John, 2nd Earl, afterwards Duke, of Lauderdale, principally to John, 2nd Earl of Tweeddale, afterwards Marquess, 1659-1672. All are published by Henry M Paton in ‘Miscellany VI’, ‘Scottish History Society’, 3rd series, volume xxxiii (1939), except one on the process depending against the Earl of Morton and Viscount Grandison concerning Orkney and Zetland, 1669 (folio 79), and two regarding the revenue, 1669 (folios 86-87).
(ii) Letters of Lady Margaret Kennedy, afterwards Burnet, to Lauderdale, 1661-1670, undated, similar in character to those published in ‘Letters from Lady Margaret Burnet to John, Duke of Lauderdale’, (Bannatyne Club, 1828). (Folio 143.)
(iii) Copy in Lauderdale's hand of Dr Robert South's panegyric on Lord Middleton, 1663 (folio 155); similar copies of letters of Lauderdale, with a Royal letter signed by Lauderdale, to Hamilton and the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury on taxation, 1667, 1669 (folio 157); transcript of Lauderdale's letter to the King, of 16 November 1669, on the Act of Supremacy, said to have been made from a copy in Hamilton's handwriting and differing from the version printed in ‘Lauderdale papers’, volume ii, ‘Camden Society’, New Series, volume xxxvi, page 163 (folio 160).
