Much of the correspondence takes the form of letters to Jonathan Duncan, Governor of Bombay, and covers such matters as Walker's efforts to mediate between rivals to the succession in Baroda; his successful campaign against the dissident Malhar Rao; the reform of the Gaikwar's army and the expulsion of the Arab mercenaries from Baroda; the consolidation of the Company's position in the area; the prolonged campaign against Kánhoji, Sindhia and Holkar; the difficulty of maintaining and deploying the small subsidiary force; the alleged peculation of Aka Mohomed; the management of the military settlement of Kathiawar and Kutch which delayed Walker's departure from India until 1810; his commitment to the abolition of female infanticide and his nurturing of a team of able assistants such as James Rivett Carnac, Archibald Robertson, James Macmurdo and Samuel Greenwood.

MSS.13633-13634 are remarkable in that they chart, almost day by day, the course of Colonel Murray's abortive campaigns against Holkar during 1803 and 1804 in the form of letters to Walker at Baroda, and also contain parallel details from Captain George Williams serving with the subsidiary force.
