Manuscript transcriptions of Akkadian cuneiform inscriptions from artefacts found during the excavations of Austen Henry Layard excavations at "Nimroud"., 1845-1847.
Scope and Contents
These transcriptions were taken from two artifacts found during the excavations undertaken by Austen Henry Layard - a winged bull and a slab. For a brief description of the winged bulls at the centre of the mound see “Nineveh and its Remains”, volume 1, page 47. For “Plan 2” mentioned in the annotation on transcription of the text on the slab see “Nineveh and its Remains”, volume 1, facing page 34.
There are annotations by Layard at the head of the transcriptions. Writing in square brackets below have been crossed out on the original:
folio 1 : “On the back of Bull No. 1. Centre ?of the Mound, Nimroud (many lines are probably wanting at the commencement of the inscription)”;
folio 2 : “On [centr] Bull (No. 1), centre of the Mound. (Nimroud) (between the fore legs)”;
folio 3 : “[On Bull (No. 1) Centre of Mound.] (Under the Belly)”.
folio 4 : “Slab on the ground – before No. 18. Wall k. Plan 2. (Nimroud)”.
