Letters of Sara and Benjamin Austen to Austen Henry Layard., 1842-1879.
Scope and Contents
The letters in this sequence are of Sara and Benjamin Austen to their nephew, Sir Austen Henry Layard, over a period of 37 years. During that time, Layard made his famous excavations, wrote books about his discoveries, transferred some of the finds to the British Museum, became a politician, and was appointed as an ambassador. The letters reflect these times in the life of their nephew and talk about reactions to the books Layard published, as well as his reputation.
