Papers concerning the "Murray Handbooks for Travellers" series., 1834-1924.
Scope and Contents
Murray's 'Hanbooks for Travellers' series was begun in 1836 by John Murray III, after his own experiences of travelling on the continent.
This was a time when improved transport links and increased leisure time were making foreign travel increasingly easy and popular. The innovative 'Handbooks' responded to a need for detailed practical guides for new middle-class travellers.
The early Handbooks covered Europe and Britain, and by the end of the 19th century included Russia, New Zealand, India and Japan. As the range and number of editions increased, Murray paid other editors, writers and contributors to keep the 'Handbooks' up to date. Travellers were also encouraged to write to Murray with corrections and suggestions for the guides.
Most of the 'Handbook' titles were sold to Edward Stanford for £2000 in 1901.
The papers in this series all relate to the 'Handbooks'. There are many letters from travellers giving recommendations for future editions, papers relating to the sale, and various records relating to the history, advertising and production of the 'Handbook series.
