Scope and Contents
Politician John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton, (1786-1869) was part of the circle of John Murray [II], largely through his friendship with the poet Lord Byron. Hobhouse also had works published by Murray throughout his life.
The material in this sequence contains numerous letters, manuscripts, proofs and miscellaneous papers relating to John Cam Hobhouse. There is correspondence with John Galt, John Hanson, Thomas Moore, John Murray [II] and John Murray [III] among others.
Most of the manuscripts here relate to Byron, including two copies of 'My Boy Hobby' by Byron and manuscripts relating to the opinion of Hobhouse on 'The life of Lord Byron' by John Galt. Also included in the sequence are proofs and a privately printed edition of 'Contemporary account of the separation of Lord and Lady Byron' by Hobhouse. The manuscript for this work is held in the Byron papers at MSS.43521.
At the end of the sequence there is some miscellaneous material, including two portraits of Hobhouse.
