Papers of and concerning William Gifford., 1779-1934.
Scope and Contents
Editor and satirist William Gifford (1756-1826) was an important figure in the history of the publishing house of John Murray. As editor of the 'Quarterly Review', Gifford was heavily involved in producing a significant, highly respected and popular periodical. In addition, Gifford acted as a literary advisor to John Murray [II] and his opinion was highly valued by the publisher.
There is a vast amount of correspondence here, including hundreds to John Murray [II]. There is also correspondence of or to John Coleridge, William Cookesley, Octavius Gilchrist and Robert Hay, as well as other letters to other various correspondents.
In addition to the correspondence, there are some other papers relating to William Gifford - a manuscript entitled 'Herrick No.7' and a copy of the will of William Gifford. Finally, there are printed items that relate to Gifford either personally or in his role as the editor of the 'Quarterly Review'.
