Papers of and concerning Robert Cecil., 1860-1896.
Scope and Contents
Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, third Marquess of Salisbury, was Prime Minister three times during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to his political career, Cecil also wrote many journalistic pieces for various periodicals, including the 'Quarterly Review' published by John Murray.
The papers here include over 60 letters of Cecil, mainly to John Murray [III], concerning articles for the 'Quarterly Review', politics, giving advice on other articles to publish, and thanking Murray for various publications. Other recipients include John Murray [IV], Sir William Smith, William Macpherson and Gathorne Hardy. In addition, there are letters of the wife of Cecil, Georgina, and his step-mother, Mary Stanley, to John Murray [III].
In addition to the letters, there is a manuscript for an article entitled 'The Commune and the International' by Salisbury. The article appeared in the 'Quarterly Review' in October 1871. The manuscript has been bound with a portrait of Cecil and a letter of Mary Stanley.
